Limescale is dissolved by acid, and the three acids people reach for are vinegar, citric acid and a branded descaler. Which one is safe depends on the fixture: a kettle needs a product its manufacturer allows, a shower head needs whatever its own manual permits, and a tap depends on its finish. Before you soak anything, find out how hard your water is and what the fixture is made of. Those two things decide how often you do this and whether you can do it at all, and I didn’t know either of them until I looked.

Find out how hard your water actually is

Water hardness is measured in milligrams per litre of calcium carbonate, and your supplier publishes the figure for your postcode. Thames Water’s scale runs: Soft “up to 100”, Slightly hard “100 -150”, Moderately hard “150 - 200”, Hard “200 - 300”, and Very hard “More than 300”. Thames also says plainly that “all the water in our region is hard”.

Look up your own supplier’s number and put it against that scale. Anything from 200 upwards means a kettle element can crust over within a month and a shower head can start spraying sideways within a few. Everything below is written for that end of the scale. In a slightly hard area the same methods apply, just at longer intervals.

Acids and finishes: what is safe on plastic, chrome, brass and stone

All descalers work the same way: an acid reacts with the calcium carbonate and turns it into something that rinses away. The difference is in strength, and in what else the acid attacks while it’s there.

Viakal’s product information sheet gives its pH, neat, as 2.2, which is strongly acidic. The same sheet lists the surfaces to avoid: “old enamel, plastic water boiler, marble or natural stone, silver, gold, copper and aluminum”. That list is the useful bit. Marble and stone are calcium carbonate themselves, so an acid dissolves the worktop as happily as the scale. Copper, brass and aluminium fittings discolour or pit. Gold-coloured and “brushed” tap finishes are often a thin coating over brass and can be stripped. And “plastic water boiler” means a bathroom limescale spray isn’t a kettle descaler; the kettle needs its own product.

Chrome-plated brass, which is what most rented-flat taps are, is on the sheet’s intended-use list (“taps, showers”) for short contact times. The plating is thin, and repeated long soaks are what wear it through. Plastic is fine with citric acid and vinegar, which is why those are the usual choice for kettles.

The precautions are the same whatever you use. Wear washing-up gloves, open a window, rinse thoroughly with clean water afterwards, and never mix a descaler with bleach or any other cleaner. Bleach and acid together give off harmful gas, which matters most in the bathroom, where both tend to live. That’s covered properly in removing limescale from a toilet, because the toilet is where people most often end up with both products in the same bowl. In a shared house, where three people might each own a different bottle, it’s worth saying out loud.

Kettle: what the manual allows and the rinse-boil-empty step

Start with the manual, because that’s where the guarantee lives. The Russell Hobbs kettle instructions say to “Use a descaler suitable for plastic products (all kettles have plastic parts)”, and the guarantee section adds that “Products returned under guarantee with faults due to scale will incur a repair charge.” In other words, scale damage is your problem, not theirs, and so is anything an unsuitable product does to the plastic parts.

The method:

  1. Fill the kettle to the maximum line with cold water and add the descaler at the dose on its packet. The manual’s instruction is to “Follow the instructions on the descaler”: a citric acid sachet or a kettle descaler gives a quantity per litre, so use that, not a guess. If you want to use vinegar, check the kettle manual allows it first; not all do, and it will smell, so open the window.
  2. Either boil it and leave it, or leave it cold for longer, depending on what the descaler’s packet says. Branded products typically want minutes; citric acid wants longer for a badly crusted element. Don’t leave it overnight unless the packet and the manual both say you can.
  3. Pour it away and look at the element. If there’s still white crust, repeat rather than scrubbing.
  4. Then do what the manual asks: “rinse, fill, boil, and empty, to avoid residues”. A second rinse-boil-empty is cheap insurance against a sour first cup of tea.

The whole thing is about ten minutes of actual attention, and it pairs well with the shower head soak on the same day. The manual says kettles need it regularly “even in soft water areas”, which is the bit that surprised me, and which explains why a soft-water kettle still ends up with a thin film after a year.

Tap: the bag-over-the-spout method and how long to leave it

Scale on a tap collects in two places: around the base where drips sit, and in the aerator at the end of the spout, where it blocks the mesh and makes the flow spit.

For the spout, half-fill a small freezer bag with descaler diluted as the packet says, pull it up over the spout so the end is submerged, and hold it in place with an elastic band. Leave it for the contact time on the product, not longer. For Viakal on encrusted scale the sheet says “Leave to act for a few minutes before rinsing and repeat if needed”. Minutes, rinse, look, repeat. An hour-long soak is what wears through chrome plating.

If the aerator unscrews, and on most mixer taps it does with a bit of grip from a cloth, take it off and drop it in a cup of the same solution instead. That cleans the mesh from both sides and keeps the acid off the chrome entirely.

For the base of the tap, soak a strip of kitchen roll in the solution, wrap it round the base, leave it for the same few minutes, then rinse and dry. Drying is what stops the ring coming straight back.

Check the finish first. If the tap is brass, copper, gold-effect or anything other than plain chrome, the Viakal list above says avoid it. And a cheap chrome tap in a rented flat is still the landlord’s tap.

Shower head: unscrew if you can, check the manual if you cannot

A shower head that unscrews from its hose is the easiest fixture in the flat to descale. Take it off, put it in a bowl or the basin with descaler at the packet dilution, leave it for the packet’s contact time, then rinse and poke any stubborn holes with a cocktail stick. Run it for a minute before showering to flush the last of the acid through.

The problem is the shower head that doesn’t unscrew, or a fixed head on an electric shower. Triton’s advice is clear: “Before soaking a showerhead or using vinegar, citric acid or another descaling product, check the cleaning guidance in the shower manual. Some chemicals can damage finishes, seals or internal components if they are used incorrectly.” An electric shower has rubber seals and a heater tank behind the head, and acid drawn back into those isn’t covered by anyone’s guarantee.

If there’s no manual in the flat, the model number is usually on a sticker on the unit and the manufacturer’s site will have the PDF. If you still can’t find guidance, the safe fallback is the bag method from the tap section, used on the outside of the head only, for a few minutes, with no acid going up the hose.

Descaler, citric acid and spare kettle sachets belong together in one lidded box, away from the bleach. The reasoning is in under-sink storage that survives leaks.

How often, and the cheap habit that halves the work

In the hard band, monthly for the kettle and shower head and quarterly for the tap is a sensible starting point, adjusted to what you see when you look at the element. In a slightly hard area, double those intervals. The kettle is the one to keep on a calendar, because a scaled element boils slower, uses more electricity, and is the one appliance whose guarantee explicitly excludes scale.

The habit that halves the work is drying. Scale is what’s left behind when hard water evaporates, so a tap that’s wiped dry after the washing-up and a shower screen squeegeed after each shower simply have less water evaporating on them. It’s thirty seconds, and it means the monthly soak is dealing with a month of scale rather than a season’s worth.

The other cheap habit is emptying the kettle after use instead of leaving water standing in it. Standing water evaporates onto the element, so an empty kettle scales slower than a full one.
